RE: Why so many blowouts on Travel Trailers

Hi SSB,
Yours is a classic problem of being over weight for the tire quality. This would really show up easy on the bias tires and you'd take a ice pick and poke a hole in the bubble as this kept from blowing off a small amount of sidewall rubber that then would lead to a sidewall blow out.
I'd be getting your rig weighed and check that your tire rating exceeds your load weight your carrying.
T-Bone,
I suppose this could be an issue. More possible than probable. You're right however, I should get it weighed. The most I've ever carried in the TH was 2 golf carts plus camping gear for a week at the beach and that was last summer. I've got a dry weight of 5,650, CCC of 3865, and a limit of 10,000. I don't think it maxed me out but then again, I could be surprised. Usually, I travel once a month with just one atv and camping gear. Reading all the above posts, I'd probably say now it was cheap chinese tires. ST 225/75R15 "D" rated. At any rate, I'm satisfied and impressed with Nankang's efforts to make it right.
Thanks for the info.

RE: Why so many blowouts on Travel Trailers

Maybe another consideration that was explained to me by my tire guy. This one applies to Travel Trailers only though. I had my tires rotated and he noticed a large bulge on one of my tires. He told me the belt had broken. I replaced that tire. 3 weeks ago I was doing a pre-trip inspection and found another tire with a bulge on the same side. Had to replace that tire also. My tire guy told me the reason I was breaking belts was because of the Equalizer hitch. I have to back down a hill and sharply turn on my pavement driveway to park my Toyhauler. He said the hitch causes a lot of flex in the tires. I noticed how they were leaning while I was doing this maneuver several times. Maybe this is what led to mine. Tell you what though, I called Nankang and they have already sent me 2 replacement tires and are going to reimburse me for the 2 I had to buy.

Does anyone have a working website to Thor/Tahoe/Vortex Toyhaulers? The one listed on this site isn't doing much. Thanks.

RE: Furnace

So far it's Smithrock for the win! I did get it in the dealer and he said it was the high limit switch. A strip of temperature sensitive metal that when it gets hot bends up and the furnace shuts off. Then it cools and makes contact with something and the furnace comes on again. We'll see if that's the case. I am going to need the camper for New Years so I hope it's fixed before then. Thanks to all who replied with helpful suggestions.

RE: Furnace

Thanks Fred. I did have an electric heater that we used and a little propane one (Buddy Heater)with bottles on back up just in case.
"Usually I would say the fan safety sail switch is not working, so the furnace will not start. But if you are plugged in, then the voltage should be high enough to spin the fan fast, allowing it to start."
I did hear the fan come on but after about 45 seconds of blowing cold air it would cut off every time. I figure it was trying but would not light. I was plugged in and therefore the "new" 12v battery was fully charged.
"Try shutting it off for about 10 minutes and then start it again. This sometimes clears out any faults from the electronic circuit board."
I did this also before we went to bed. I even cut if off when I gave up at night and tried it again in the morning. Even tried it this afternoon when we got home.
I am gonna call the dealer tomorrow and try to take it asap. I hate the dealer. I hate hooking up just to take it there. Thanks for your thoughts. If you can think of anything else to try, let me know.
Thanks again,
SBB

Furnace

Have you ever had this happen to you? My wife took the camper to the campsite and hooked up about 6pm. The heat was turned on and ran fine. I got there about 1am because of work. A few times during the night I noticed the furnace cycle like it's supposed to with the thermostat set at 70*. It ran fine all the next day until just before bedtime. I noticed it was cold in the camper and put the thermostat up to about 80*. I heard the fan come on, noticed it was blowing cold air and in about 45 seconds it cut off. I tried several times, cut the stove on for about 10 minutes (to make sure propane was in the system) and tried several times after that. It's like it wouldn't light. I checked to make sure the tank was full and it is. The next morning we cooked breakfast using 2 burners of the stove and the oven for biscuits. What could've happened? It ran fine and hot for 2 days before quitting. Hooked up to electricity, full battery, and full propane.

RE: Stove top coffee pot recommendations

Thanks tvme. Sorry it took a while to get back to everyone, I was camping of course. We did stay with hookups so this past weekend was no coffee problems. However, I appreciate the advice on how to use the stove top one. We'll take this wisdom next time we don't have hookups. Thanks again.

RE: Stove top coffee pot recommendations

Forgive me for being so inexperienced but how is the best way to use one of those stove top coffee makers? I bought a cheap one at Walmart. This one is speckled blue with no little glass thing on the top. It has a removable lid of course and on the inside a little aluminum basket with tiny holes. This basket sits on an aluminum shaft that goes down to the bottom of the pot. Without knowing what to do, I put 8 spoon fulls of coffee in the basket and filled the water up about 2/3 of the pot. I brought the water to a boil for about 15 minutes. It was good but I would like to hear step by step from someone who knows how to use one of these things. How much coffee, how much water, how long to boil?
Thanks, SBB

Water heater rust

Anyone notice a significant amount of rust on and around the plug of their hot water heater? I have a 6 gallon atwood and remove the plug to drain the water heater nearly after every trip. Lately, I've noticed a lot of rust on the plug and the treads. I have removed the anode rod because it was a "10" on the difficulty scale to replace the plug with the rod attached. Wonder if the rust is because the rod is gone? Wonder if it will get worse? Comments?
